This is an opportunity to work for one of the UK's most prestigious B2B insurers. They are the engine behind many household name retail and private insurers that you will recognise from the TV, advertising etc.

 

It's a remote-first opportunity, but if you like an office presence, you're welcome to work from their global HQ in London or one of their regional offices across key hubs in Scotland, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff etc. They are a 10,000 employee organisation with around 700 people in technology.

 

The platform / DevOps department has just hired a new manager who is adopting a 'Netflix model' in terms of the technical team structure and methodologies. IT and technology are being revolutionised across the business but the key focus here is the migration of on-prem applications onto their public cloud environments (Azure, AWS and some GCP).

 

Job Role:

This is an unusual position as the Head of DevOps wants the successful candidate to originally come from an Azure background, but your duties will be 70% people management and 30% technical. You will be leading a huge initiative in the business as you will be moving a major application in a lift-and-shift project, i.e. from Data Centre to an Azure public cloud environment. Your core duties will look like this:

  • On-prem application sitting in a DC to Azure migration.
  • Listen to the programme; drive ceremonies to be an agile coach.
  • Make sure stand-ups are done and document written processes.
  • You will initially be managing a team of 5 which will be increased to 15 and then reduced once the programme has been 'normalised'.
  • Managing challenging stakeholders and 'getting things done'.
  • The environment is somewhat 'political' and needs you to assist in diplomatically mollifying things.
  • The role will evolve further over time.
  • An ex-consultancy background would be helpful as you will be managing a multitude of onshore and offshore consultancy partners. These will ultimately be reduced as more perm hires are made.

 

Tech stack:

As mentioned only 30% of this role will be technically hands-on due to the lead duties of this role but you must have some commercial Azure exposure for success in this position. Here's the main tech stack:

  • Azure. Your applications will be sitting in Azure, so exposure is essential.
  • AWS and GCP are also used across the business so you may gain exposure here in the future.
  • Terraform.
  • Kubernetes.
  • Azure DevOps / GitHub Actions.
  • Development background / exposure is a plus (Node.js / Python) but not essential.
